States of Mind

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy day “

(Thich Nhat Hahn)

Through mindful walking and being immersed in all weathers in rural and urban environments, Zoë collects textures, marks and patterns, recording felt and observed experiences in space and time. This reflection on mood and feeling is a visceral process that is then transferred to the studio.

Zoë uses many different forms of printmaking but she is not a traditional printmaker although she has trained and is self taught in many printmaking techniques. She prints papers using a wide range of techniques from screen printing to woodblock printing but these papers are part of a bigger process to make one design. She uses a skill stemming from her time as printed textile designer called intercutting, a technique which could be classed as décollaging the opposite of collaging. The printed intercut elements make the papers one piece rather than layering them on top of one another.

Combining these prints together in this way is integral to the process and all the papers are carefully selected to create the mood of the pieces.
